Review: Monsieur Lazhar
If you're a teacher, then you absolutely must see the French-Canadian film, Monsieur Lazhar.
A touching and beautiful film that moved me to tears, the title character is an Algerian immigrant who takes the reins of a Year 6 class, whose teacher tragically and inexplicably took her own life one day in the classroom.
As Monsieur Lazhar steers the (absolutely gorgeous and precocious) children through the trauma and general perils of life, they build a lasting relationship which is threatened when it is revealed that Monsieur Lazhar is not a trained teacher.
This film is a tender love letter to the teaching profession and a timely reminder of why we are in this crazy profession. As the rather cheesy magnets and t-shirts say, "Teaching is a work of heart." Make sure you take plenty of tissues!
